Podcast Episode 36 - Still More Jazz

A while ago I did an episode which featured only Jazz or jazzy versions of songs from different genres. This seemed to go well with the you, the listeners, and given that I'm a real fan of Jazz music (of certain types of Jazz at least), I decided to scour my collection again for some new pearls.

This is what I came up with. This episode has more Jazz covers and some pretty cool and great songs.

So the episode lineup is as follows:

Podcast Episode 35 - All Fours

So here I was, with a bit of time to spare, wanting to do something to take my mind off of stuff, when I remembered I hadn't done an episode of the podcast in ages!

So I just had to sit down and pick some great covers to play for you tonight. But the thing is: I had thought of a theme for this show, but I don't happen to have enough songs to make a whole episode on that theme on my current collection and I really wanted to get this episode posted this weekend, so I just had to choose my songs some other way.

And this is what I've come up with. The tittle says it all really... These are some of the covers in my collection with a 4 star rating. (From the ones I haven't played yet, they are all new songs to the show).

Why, what did you think the title meant?

This is what you're going to listen to on the show tonight:

Podcast Episode 34 - The Simplicity Of Strings

Hello, welcome back to the show.

Today I bring you an episode which I've recorded a few days ago, but didn't find the time to post it until now.

The format of the show is a bit different than usual since I just introduce all the songs right at the beginning and then play them back-to-back, without the originals or any additional comments by me.

The show is a quiet one, with pretty "simple" songs with few instruments, but I explain things in more depth in the intro.

The line-up is as follows:

Glad to see you're still out there and you've been so patient and waited for me to come back to play some more songs for you.

And so that's what you get, some great new covers, this time around from oldies that we all know...

The line-up for the show is as follows:

Podcast Episode 32 - Twenty-something

Tonight we're going on a little journey through the 80's.

I'll play for you a cover of one song per year, from 1980 through 1989, this time without the segment from the originals and with very little talking in between them.

And so we have the following selection all geared up on the time machine:

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

Podcast Episode 31 - Not Gone Yet!

Hi there!

First let me just get this out of the way: for those of you who've asked me about the show - no, I'm not gone, and neither is the show. At least not just yet. :-)

I have, however, fallen back to the two-week schedule for releasing the episodes.

This week we have five songs, uninterrupted by my babbling.

And this is the selection for tonight's show:

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

Podcast Episode 30 - Merry Christmas!

Hello everyone, and a very merry Christmas! :-)

Well, this is the Christmas special episode and it's filled with Christmas-related songs (even if only tangentially in some cases).

This episode features all it's songs (except the first one that works as background music) played uninterrupted, with all the talking done at the beginning. I hope you enjoy it.

The holiday selection is as follows:

Podcast Episode 29 - The Big U-Turn

I promised I'd try and make good use of the kind help I've been getting and here it is, a brand-new episode. And next week there's more!

So in this show I start out with something in mind and then, in the middle of recording, I had to stop, leave home and come back to it later - after dinner and some shopping - and after that things take a different direction than the one I had initially planed.

I'd like to point out the last track to you as something particularly interesting. It is not something that's easy to listen to, I'm aware of that, but do try, I thing you might well be pleasantly surprised...

Tonight's selection is as follows:

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

Podcast Episode 28 - He Said, She Said That It's Never Too Much Rock!

Yet another big surprise, both for you and for me.

Earlier this week I received an Email from Sid and Katherine from Too Much Rock with a submission for a whole show. And what a fun show it is, I'm sure you'll all enjoy it a lot, just as I have!

So many thanks to you both, Sid and Katherine, and if you ever again feel the need to put on a show late at night, just for the fun of it, then by all means, do send it over! :-)

Oh and to make good on their intentions I promise right now that there will be a new show next week, and the week after that. How's that for a good incentive?

Too Much Rock's selection, then, is as follows:

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

PS- I'll be away for the weekend (starting tomorrow), so any comments you care to leave on the podcast will have to wait for me to get back to be approved.

Podcast Episode 27 - C&C

Tonight's show is something really far out.

Not only is it produced by a couple friend of mine --Carlos and Carla (no link yet for either of them, but I'm told there will be something of that nature in time for the next show)-- but it is also a different concept, which was completely conceived by them.

Thank you both, it sure feels good to just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Due to the show's nature there is no track listing this week. It will all make sense when you listen to it, so do it already! :-)

You can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

PS- Please feel free to show your appreciation for Carlos' and Carla's idea and work in the comments, they will read them and I'm sure they will enjoy them.

Podcast Episode 26 - Love And Other Afflictions

Another show is here for your listening delight and this is mostly a mellow show, with soft songs.

In it I also make the announcement that I'm pulling back the podcast from being weekly to biweekly. At this stage it is just too hard for me to keep it up at a weekly rate all by myself.

Tonight's selection is as follows:

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

Podcast Episode 25 - Marado's Marilyn - Part 3 - Cover Him

Tonight we have the third --and I think final-- part of Marcos Marado's series on Marilyn Manson.

This time around we'll listen to covers that other artists made of Manson's songs.

Just be aware that the sound is really not very good so you'll have to strain a bit to understand it all, but I do think it is worth it.

Marado's selection for us tonight is:

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

Podcast Episode 24 - Happy Birthday Honey!

Today is my wife's (Tuxa) Birthday and so I just had to make this a special episode dedicated to her. Kind of a small present.

Well, these are all covers that mean something special to her, either because she likes them or because they have some other meaning which I'll briefly alude to in the show.

And no, it is not an all-sappy/girlie show, do listen to it, even if you are more inclined to noisier, heavier music. I guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Without further ado, the "Birthday selection" is:

Podcast Episode 22 - Hodgepodge

Podcast Episode 21 - They Do It To Themselves!

Some artists just can't leave their own work alone and get back to it over and over again. Well in this episode I explore some covers that artists and bands make of their own songs.

Some of the songs featured aren't exactly "covers" and are more "alternate versions" but they're all either good songs or fun enough to listen to.

Be warned, though, some of the content may be of quite questionable quality. I did promise to play all the good and the bad versions on this podcast remember?

The lineup is as follows:

Podcast Episode 20 - So what's your request, then?

It's listeners choices time, again!

I've got a bad cold tonight so I try (and fail spectacularly) to keep the talk to a minimum as I take this fine opportunity to experience the healing power of music and end up producing the longest show yet!

As you may notice, there are no links to the artists featured in this episode, only their names. Now I won't tell you why that is here in the post, you'll have to listen to the show and find out just how silly I really am! :-)

Right then, this is the fine selection you gals and guys have come up with for us tonight:

  • 00:00 - Intro
  • 03:14 - Nonpoint vs Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight
  • 08:47 - Guster vs Neal Diamond - Sweet Caroline
  • 13:15 - Dread Zeppelin vs Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
  • 23:40 - <Unknown Artist> vs Queen - Bicycle Race
  • 26:35 - Napalm Death vs Dead Kennedys - Nazi Punks Fuck Off
  • 28:54 - Marylin Manson vs The Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
  • 35:04 - Apoptygma Berzerk vs OMD - Electricity
  • 42:00 - The Muppets vs The Troggs - Wild Thing
  • 47:41 - Outro

As always, you can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.

Podcast Episode 19 - Rolling in the hay

Having been away on the countryside with no Internet connectivity and little reason to pick up my laptop (other than to save all the pictures I took into it's hard drive) I almost let this episode slip!

Almost, but not quite.”
I give you, then, a whole episode dedicated to country music from down to earth good ol' country to blue grass and some other styles in between.

And the mighty fine selection I have setup for you tonight is as follows:

Podcast Episode 18 - Cog Gets Down To Business

Hi there!

We're back with yet another fine selection of cover songs.

And this time I have a surprise for all of you as I give up my hosting duties in favour of my friend José Castro (also known as Cog). You see, we are both at a conference in Birmingham and when he asked me if he could host an episode I immediately jumped at the opportunity to sit back and let somebody else do the work!

Cog is a prolific blogger and you can go over to his primary blog (in Portuguese) where you'll find links to all his other blogs (also in Portuguese). But don't despair, he also publishes things in English!

So what's Cog chosen for us tonight? Let's find out, shall we?

A little help from our friends?

Hi there everyone!

So, you're a listener of the show and you know your way around a piece of paper and a pencil? Think you can draw? Feel like you're a (potential or established) design-related artist?

Well... This call is for you then.

You see, we need a logo. The big, ugly red "U" just isn't cutting it really and I can't for the life of me draw even a straight line. Fred tells me he's likewise artistically-challenged (we do use a stock design on our blog, so that should give you an hint...) But we'd really like to have a nice clean logo for our show.

So I'm here to beg you basically. Not for money, definitely not that, but if you have any ideas whatsoever and feel like you could spare a few minutes ;-) drawing up a logo and donating it to us we'd be forever in your debt. Why, we'd even make a special episode dedicated just to you!

What do you think? Any takers out there? We'd like to have something really simple and neat, so that we could use it on a small scale as the site's icon, but that would also work on a bigger size, so we could put it on the site's header and even in external podcast directories (which, since Fred went ahead and submitted the podcast to the iTunes directory, we are now going to start populating with references to this show).
