Podcast Episode 3 - Slightly Disturbing
Hello again, we're back with yet another episode of the Undercover Songs Podcast.
This is episode three and it is a slightly different show.
Unfortunately Fred couldn't make it in time with his choices, so when it came down to the last day I had to improvise and I decided to save my own choices for the next "regular" episode and, instead, come up with something that has been kicking around in my mind for a while now: a special show based on songs that are in some way disturbing.
I have a few covers which, for one reason or another, are just slightly unnerving to listen to. They may be weird, creepy, or just plain dissonant, but either way they leave you with a strange, uneasy feeling and they are, all of them, just slightly disturbing...
So anyway I have a few "specials" cooking and this is a perfect occasion to produce the first one. Also this one rather fits my mood these days so there you have it.
Today's song line-up is the following (and I really didn't have the time to look up each band and get links for them):
- 00:00 - Intro by Nuno
- 02:14 - Souls vs Prince And The Revolution - Take Me With U
- 09:15 - P J Harvey & Bjork vs The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
- 13:40 - Stina Nordenstam vs The Doors - People Are Strange
- 18:21 - Frank Black vs The Pixies - Where Is My Mind
- 23:01 - Extra track: Marilyn Manson - The Food Pyramid
(Why yes, I'm well aware of the irony in "Frank Black vs The Pixies", thanks for pointing it out!) ;-)
You can download the show here or listen to it directly with the flash player below.
If you'd like to receive this podcast automatically in your podcatcher you can subscribe to it using the big orange button on the right.
I hope you enjoy the show and are not too freaked out... :-)
See you next week!
Update: In all the hurry I completely forgot to mention that the Marilyn Manson song was contributed by a friend of ours and listener, Marado. Thanks dude and sorry that I forgot...

WOW... I can't believe it! You just did a podcast where I like ALL the covers!!!

I don't know how to say this without hurting your feelings. I love the podcast, I love the songs, but I just can't stand your english accent. It's gruesome, sounds artificial, hurts my sensible eardrums. Aaagh.
I couldn't help but chuckle as I heard the "OK computer" take on episode 2. It actually sounded warm, compared to your voices.

Souls were just wild. And then two of my favorites ladies (no, not Jagger and Richards), PJ & Bjork. People Are Strange's cover has the same spaciality of the original but is much slower, i like Door's bop-iness best. As for the Pixies, well, they're like a teenage love, so the original will always sound best (is FB sounding like Bowie-marooned in a home studio?). Manson? Eeeeeaaaaaahhh!!!!

I think I'm getting addicted to this podcast (the first I am really following and actually added to my feed aggregator). Thank you for the music.
As for the accent, I think it really doesn't matter: we can understand it and, being honest, it just feels like home ;)

My comments are all grouped into this big burst because I'm having problems with my Internet access at home and I couldn't check out the comments before now.
Noori: I can't believe it either! I knew *one of them* was sure to please you, seen as you were the one who suggested it ;-) but not all of them...
mee-guel: No hard feelings, I do know my accent is terrible, but it's the only one I've got and Fred the computer is not available at the moment for this gig... You *do* realize we're both originally from non-English speaking countries (and we still live there) right? :-) Anyway we keep our intros short so you can save your sensible eardrums by fast-forwarding just a little bit before each song and getting right to the good stuff!
Rob: Pixies are an old love-affair for me too. In fact I've got tickets to see them in a few weeks and frankly I'm a bit scared at the prospect of seeing them live nowadays, but let's see how it goes...
António: Hey, careful about that, we don't condone any addictions here! But... well, if you must, then I guess you could do a *lot* worse than being addicted to our podcast! ;-)

Listening to some Lisbon radio station here in the office, I heard a cover that I think is definitely better than the original: Everything But The Girls's version of Rod Stewart's "I Don't Want To Talk About It".
I just had to come here share this opinion (sorry...).

António: Sorry it took so long to answer, this comment must have slipped through when I wasn't looking... :-)
Don't apologize for leaving feedback, we love it! That's why we keep asking for it.
I obviously know that version and I haven't heard it in ages. Good suggestion, it will find it's way to our pipeline of songs.
